How to Prepare a Floor for Epoxy Paint
An epoxy floor can last 10 to 20 years with normal use, but only if it is laid on a properly prepared surface. Almost every epoxy failure we are called to look at, peeling, bubbling or lifting under tyres, comes back to preparation rather than the product.
This guide explains what good preparation involves, so you know what to expect whether you are doing it yourself or getting it done professionally.
Step 1: clear and clean
The floor needs to be completely empty. Sweep and vacuum up all loose dust and grit, then deal with anything that will stop the coating bonding. Oil, grease and tyre marks are the usual culprits in garages; they need degreasing properly, because epoxy will not stick to an oily surface.
Step 2: remove old or failing coatings
If the floor has been painted before, any loose, flaking or peeling coating has to come off. New epoxy over a failing layer will fail with it. Sound, well-bonded coatings may be able to stay, but they still need preparing so the new layer can grip.
Step 3: open up the surface
Smooth, dense concrete is too slick for epoxy to key into. The surface needs mechanically preparing so the coating has something to grip. This is the step most DIY jobs skip, and the main reason they peel.
Step 4: repair and check
Before any coating goes down:
- Fill cracks, holes and damaged areas so the finish is even
- Check the slab is dry, because moisture coming up through concrete pushes coatings off
- Vacuum again to remove all dust from the preparation
- Check the air and floor temperature suit the product
Step 5: prime, coat and let it cure
The primer and coating system then go on in the order the manufacturer sets out. Anti-slip, chemical and oil resistant finishes can be built in at this stage. Curing time is not optional: light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 hours, and full use including vehicles typically after 72 hours.
When to call a professional
